What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.
- William Shakespeare
That might be true Mr Shakespeare, but if so, why do we have such a deep need to choose the perfect name. Whether it be our child’s name, our pet’s name, business name or even the name of our car? I can guarantee that 99 out of 100 people took their time, put meaning to and emotionally attached themselves to the name that they chose. All three of my children have their particular name for a reason, and so does Pepperina Portraiture. Before I share about where this name came from, I should share a bit more about me – the photographer.
So, Hi! My name is Jess. I am named after a family member (someone I have never met). I also go by the names Mummy, Darling, Sweetheart, Big Sis, Little Sis, and Aunty Jess. I am sure there are others but you get the gist. I am the daughter of a farmer so you could say that the love of the land is in my veins. This might explain my awe of trees (but we will talk about that later). I love the wide open spaces of the country and the grandeur of the sunsets out there. Not surprisingly some of my other loves/interests are arts, craft and music – not saying that I am any good at these but I do love creating and I do appreciate what others create.
So, I mentioned that I am in awe of trees. I can’t explain it, and I don’t know why but throughout my adulthood I have been drawn to trees. My eyes go straight to the trees and the sky when road tripping (I promise that I am not the one driving). It might be the size that draws me in, or maybe the link with trees during my childhood, but the sky and trees have me in awe constantly. Maybe you have noticed that many of my products are named after trees, if you haven’t, you should check them out over at my Product Page – Oh, I absolutely love the timber display boxes and timber prints. You can check them out over there also.
As I pointed out at the beginning, humans tend to name things with meaning behind it. I wanted to have a meaningful name for my business, I wanted it to show my personality and I wanted it to be a little different. I am always urging my followers to document their life (in pictures mostly). At the beginning of my photography journey I had family portraiture in mind and wanted a name that connected to that.
So then, why Pepperina Portraiture?
I can’t draw it, I can’t sculpture it, but I can choreograph the camera controls to capture it with my own unique style.
On the top of a hill at my parent’s farm out in the Brisbane Valley (Somerset Region), stood two Pepperina trees (can you see it yet?). These trees reminded me of weeping willows and in my (single) young adult days I loved sitting under them pondering life. Then came along my future husband and a special connection to these trees continued. Under these two trees saw the beginning of our courtship, his proposal of marriage and our exchange of rings and vows.
My desire is that my little photography business, Pepperina Portraiture, will be like these two trees – sharing in special moments throughout the lives of you, my clients. Unfortunately those two Pepperina trees are no longer standing on that hill (I would have loved to of had family photos under them) however I am looking forward to planting new trees there one day to see a new generation of growth.
So, there we have it. Pepperina Portraiture’s name was birthed out of wonder and the desire to be genuine and unique – and I think that is what everyone out there is doing when they have to name something.
I wonder, what do you think of the name Pepperina Portraiture? Have you seen a Pepperina tree before? Maybe you have but just didn’t know it. How have you chosen names for your children/pets/cars/business/special project?
